Factors of smoking cessation based Transtheoretical model in the Korean armed forces : focusing on mediating effects and nicotine dependence

Abstract

|
Objective: This study was performed to investigate factors of Korean soldiers’ smoking cessation based the Transtheoretical model. Futhermore the relationship between nicotine dependence and smoking cessation was
identified both directly and indirectly through stages of change in Korean armed forces.
Methods: The study participants were 6,096 smokers from Korean armed forces enrolled smoking cessation clinic from January to December in 2017. Smoking cessation applied criteria of exhaled carbon monoxide and urine cotinine levels. In order to identify constructs of Transtheoretical model were used questionnaires adapted to circumstances of Korean soldiers designed by Prochaska et al.. Nicotine dependence were measured by Fagerstrom Test for Nicotine Dependence. Structural equation modeling is applied.
Results: Smoking cessation and positive stage transition was significantly related with higher experiential process and pros of smoking, lower behavioral process, cons of smoking, and self-efficacy. Stages of change was partially mediated the relationship among behavioral process, pros/cons of smoking, self-efficacy and smoking cessation. Stages of change was fully mediated the association between experiential process and smoking cessation. The effects of Transtheoretical model’s constructs on smoking cessation and mediating effects of stages of change were different by nicotine dependence levels.
Conclusion: Hypothetical model based Transtheoretical model was appropriated in explaining factors of smoking cessation and differences of nicotine dependence in Korean armed forces. It was emphasized the smoking cessation intervention based on Transtheoretical model and targeted nicotine dependence levels to increase successful smoking cessation.
